How Does GPS Work on the Mudita Kompakt?

You might find that location services, like those used by the Weather app on your Mudita Kompakt, behave differently than on a typical smartphone. This article explains how our system determines your location using GPS and addresses common questions and expectations.

Does the Kompakt determine my position with GPS automatically?

The Mudita Kompakt determines your location primarily using unassisted GPS satellite signals. This means it relies directly on signals received from orbiting GPS satellites to calculate its position.

The system does attempt to use GPS automatically for features that require location data. However, unlike many mobile devices which might also use Wi-Fi networks and cellular towers for faster location triangulation, the Mudita Kompakt is designed with a focus on user privacy by not using Wi-Fi or Bluetooth scanning for location purposes. It relies only on the GPS signal.

Why is finding my location sometimes slow or shows "NO GPS"?

Because the Mudita Kompakt relies only on satellite signals for location, acquiring your initial location can take longer than you might be used to with devices that use multiple location methods.

Getting a clear signal from enough satellites to successfully determine your position requires an unobstructed view of the sky. This can be challenging if you are:

  • Indoors or underground

  • In urban areas with tall buildings

  • In areas with heavy tree cover

  • Moving rapidly before the initial location is acquired and moving during use

How do I enable location sharing for apps?

For any app or feature on the Mudita Kompakt to use your GPS location, you need to ensure that location permissions are properly enabled. This typically requires enabling location services in two distinct places and they are off by default:

  • Enable System-Wide Location Sharing: First, you need to ensure location sharing is enabled. You will need to toggle the “Location sharing” on.

  • Grant Specific App Permission: After enabling system-wide location services, you must also grant the individual app that needs location access (like the Weather app) permission to use your location. Open Settings -> Location Sharing menu, select the specific app, and set its permission. You can select between “Share”, “While using app” and “Don’t share”.

If an app isn't showing your location, please double-check that both the system-wide location services and the app-specific permissions are correctly enabled. We are actively working on improving the refresh speed!

Why does the location update slowly in apps like Weather when I travel?

After your initial location is found and permissions are enabled, the system continues to track your position using GPS. Updating this information within specific applications, such as refreshing the displayed city in the Weather app, involves background processing and data synchronization.

Optimizing the frequency and speed of these background updates is an ongoing process. While the system tracks your location, it may currently take some time for the displayed information in certain features to fully reflect significant changes in location.

We are actively working to enhance this background process to provide faster and more seamless location updates for features in upcoming software releases.
