Short answerThe Dhamma Wheel (Dharmachakra) is one of the oldest symbols of Buddhism and stands for the teachings of the Buddha. On the Mudita Dhamma Automatic it turns in the center of the dial and works as the seconds hand.
What its elements mean
- Hub: ethics and moral discipline (sīla in Pali, the language in which the oldest Buddhist texts were written)
- Rim: concentration and mindfulness (samādhi)
- Eight spokes: wisdom (paññā) and the Noble Eightfold Path, that is, eight principles of daily practice described by the Buddha
The eight elements of the path are: right view, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness and right concentration.
Why the wheel is the seconds hand
Every second on the dial is a movement of the wheel. We designed the watch so that each glance at the time reminds you of these values in everyday life. We consulted the meaning of the symbol with the “Theravada” Foundation, organizer of the 13th Global Conference on Buddhism.
