The Mudita Kompakt is a minimalist phone that comes with a selection of apps developed specifically for this device and its E-ink display. While it's technically possible to manually install third-party apps, please keep in mind that sideloaded apps are not optimized for the Kompakt and might not always work as intended.
MuditaOS K
Mudita is responsible for the software and hardware of the Mudita Kompakt as installed by us (MuditaOS K package). At the moment, there is no app store available on the device.
MuditaOS K is based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), which makes it possible for users with the necessary technical skills to install Android APK files manually. However, we do advise caution due to the following:
Apps that are not specifically designed for our E-ink screen may be inconvenient to use.
Sideloaded apps could occasionally display errors due to limited integration with MuditaOS K.
MuditaOS K is designed to run without and does not support Google Services. Sideloaded apps that depend on Google Services likely won't be able to work correctly.
Since MuditaOS K does not include an APK loader, sideloading requires a computer with appropriate software connected to Mudita Kompakt via a USB-C cable.
While sideloading will not harm the device and any resulting issues can be resolved by restoring factory settings, it is not covered by the warranty. For example, if a sideloaded app causes unexpected battery drain or other performance issues, these would not qualify for warranty claims.
How to Sideload Apps on the Kompakt
If you're aware of the risks of sideloading third-party apps and want to try it, you can do so through our desktop application Mudita Center (download here). Please note that this possibility was added in MuditaOS version 1.2.0. If your Kompakt is still runnning on an older system version, please make sure to update it first before proceeding with the sideloading process.
Here is how to sideload an app step by step:
Connect your Kompakt to Mudita Center and click on "Manage Files" in the menu on the left. Next, click on "App Installers" on the file manager screen.
Click the "Add App Files" button in the top right corner and select the APK (app installer) file that you want to add.
You need to find the APK file online and download it first. For security reasons, please make sure to only download APKs from reliable sources.
Once your APK file is visible under "App Installers", click on the file on the list that you want to install.
Select "I understand and accept this risk", then click "Continue Install".
Wait for the installation to complete. The app will then appear on the Kompakt and be ready to use.
